~/.claude/projects/*/memory/
What Claude Code remembers about each project
With auto memory on, Claude Code writes notes to itself per project, indexed by a MEMORY.md file. The Memory tab lets you read them, search them, and delete the ones that are wrong — and it flags links that point nowhere.
MEMORY.md
Claude Code's auto memory, out in the open
With auto memory on, Claude Code saves notes about a project to ~/.claude/projects/<project>/memory/, listed in a MEMORY.md index it loads at the start of each session. It's separate from the CLAUDE.md files you write yourself. Notes can go stale, and a wrong note is loaded every time.
- Browse and search each project's memory files.
- Find broken links — index entries that point at files that no longer exist.
- Find orphans — memory files the index doesn't mention.
- Open, reveal or delete a file you don't want Claude to keep reading.
FAQ
Questions, answered
Where is Claude Code's auto memory stored?
In ~/.claude/projects/<project>/memory/, with MEMORY.md as the index. It's separate from CLAUDE.md, which you write yourself.
What are broken links and orphans?
A broken link is an index entry pointing at a file that no longer exists. An orphan is a memory file the index doesn't mention, so it may never be loaded.
